August 11,
2007 Cajun Shootout Motorcycle Series
No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose, LA
South LA in August is not the best time to schedule a race. The
temp. was 104 with 96% humidity and not a cloud in site. We ran
a 8.01 and 8.04 during qualifying in the morning so we posted
a 8.04 dial in. Buy the time we went up for 1st round the sun
heated up the track temp. to 143. When the bike launched off
the line it spun the tire in 1st & 2nd gear and slowed down
to only run a 8.10. Unfortunately it was not enough to run down
the slower bike, but at least we got out of the heat.
July 28,
2007 National Dragster Challenge
No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose, LA
Going
into this race we were felling confident being that we won the
last race we attended. The National Dragster Challenge is pretty
much the biggest race of the year so at least 40 bikes showed
up despite the surrounding thunder storms. Everyone show up for
a chance to win a "Wally" (The same trophy the NHRA
gives at national events) We won the race in 2004
During the early rounds of the race we had plenty of time between
runs to cool the bike off due to the ability for 1st or 2nd round
losers to buy their way back into the race and everything was
going to plan. As time started becoming to short between rounds
we started having trouble with the clutch and not enough time
to cool the bike. With all distractions going on Jimmy lost focus
and lost in the Semi final round due to a red light start.
JUNE 18,
2007
Paul pulled the motor out of the bike and took it apart and we
finally found our problem. Two of the pistons were scraping the
cylinder walls, causing the motor to loose valuable horse power.
Now we know why the more we ran the bike the slower we went,
no matter what we did. He shipped the head, old pistons, and
the block back to Vance and Hines. Hopefully they will have the
parts back in a few weeks.
JUNE 9-10,
2007
SCHNITZ MEMPHIS BLUES NATIONALS
MEMPHIS, TN
Since getting back
from Fast by Gast's shop, Paul had the body of the bike moved
back about 2 inches to its original position and he sealed off
the air box. We also changed the rear wheel from a 15 by 10 inch
to a 16 by 10 inch wheel for better traction. After changing
everything on the bike, we decided to go to the AMA Prostar SCHNITZ
MEMPHIS BLUES NATIONALS and test. Our first pass on Saturday
was a 7.42 and the second pass was a 7.41. Now we know that something
is definitely wrong.
April 26-29,
2007
Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals
Atlanta, GA
Before heading to Atlanta we ordered a
set of the latest technology of Fast By Gast's Carburetors for
about $4000.00. They should produce as much as 10 hp more at
the top end of track. The first pass on Friday we ran a 7.36
at only 180 mph, and the second pass was almost identical to
the first. We change the clutch setup for Saturday morning, and
the 60 foot time improved but the bike still only ran a 7.36
at only 180 mph. The only thing we changed from Houston till
now was the carbs and somehow we lost 2 tenths of a second. In
between the third and fourth round we tried to switch out the
carbs but ran out of time and was unable to make the last pass.
At least we have a few months to find the problem before the
next race.
Update
from April 2, 2007
O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals
Houston, TX
(March 30-April 1-2
After returning from Gainesville Paul went back to work on the
bike looking for anything that could help with the performance.
We also had to raise the front of the bike a little and get some
body work done to pass technical inspection. Going to Houston
to race following the untimely death of funny car driver Eric
Medlen, who succumb to an injury that occurred when he was testing
on Monday after the Gatornationals, had everyone still sort of
in shock. He will be truly missed by all.
On Friday our first pass was 7.24 at 187 mph. When
the bike launched the wheelie bars were to low and it picked
the rear tire up causing it to spin excessively. Our second pass
we improved to a 7.21 after the run we looked at the computer.
We were looking forward to having better air conditions on Saturday
morning but instead we awoke to heavy showers. They tried all
day to dry the track with jet dryers and helicopter but it kept
raining. The NHRA set the field using Friday. results and the
cut off time was 7.10. Even though we did qualify we still
had a good time with everyone that came out to the track.
March 15-18
2007
NHRA ACDelco Gatornationals
Gainesville, FL
After all of the stress and work, we were able to make it to
the first race of NHRA POWERade season. The first qualifying
round we ran 7.41 seconds at 180.04 mph. That was
the first pass on the new engine and we had to break it in and
make sure everything worked. Once we made it back to the pits
they remembered that when the bike stalled on the starting line
they were rushing to restart the bike they forgot the switch
for the data recorder. Second round we ran 7.208 at 185.92
mph.
On Saturday Paul used what little data he had to tune the bike
and it responded to a 7.152 at 185.64 mph. We only
had one more chance to make the 16 bike field and at that time
we would have to ran faster than 7.05. On our fourth pass he
ran 7.09 at 188.73 mph. We weren't able to qualify but
now have a good baseline tune up
We
shipped the bike to Vanse & Hines in Indianapolis last December
to have the new motor and carbon fiber air box fitted to the
chassis. They were supposed to install the ignition and the data
recorder. They got backed up with work on their bikes, so about
three weeks ago they called and said it would not be ready in
time. We decided to go pick it up on the weekend before last
so they rushed to finish the air box and Paul and Jimmy drove
almost non stop to Indy. Paul dropped the motor in, fitted the
header, and installed the ignition and race pack data logger.
Its just about done now and the first race is this weekend and
we will be leaving on Thursday.
MAY 14,
2007
Jimmy and Paul loaded the bike up and drove straight trough to
New York to the Fast by Gast shop. They worked for two days with
Paul Gast to rework the spigots so they would match up with the
new carburetors.
They ran the bike on the dyno to see the difference between the
old and new carbs, and to give us a very helpful lesson on tuning
them. After working at the FBG Shop for two days on their dyno,
Paul Miller decided to start looking for one to put at his shop.
Jan 13 &
14, 2007
we raced a Quick 16 race at a Discovery Channel "Biker Build
Off & Motorcycle Race on my Top Gas Bike at No problem Raceway
Park. Jimmy qualified 1st both days. On sat he made it to the
semi finals and on Sunday he made it to the finals but the bike
broke when he shifted to 2nd gear. |
